When the Earth defense fighters leave the station to attack the alien cruiser, I swear the inside of one looks like the inside of an X-wing!

The entire sequence was a parody of the battle of Yavin IV. And a damn good one at that. Gotta love the pepsi missles in the trench run.

Since it is officially a Star Wars parody, now I know why the cruiser's laser weapon seemed so reminiscent of the Death Star's planet killer.

Funny. I always thought that that scene was largely inspired by Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross, including the big main gun. Of course, it's easy to believe that Macross itself (and any number of other space-opera anime) was inspired by Star Wars.

Wasn't Macross AFTER A-ko?
And then there is the whole trench scene and the long drawn out shot to see how big the Egota Class cruiser is.
It reeks of "A New Hope."

Nope. Macross came out in 1982. Plenty of time for it to influence A-ko, but also easily long enough after Star Wars to be influenced by it in turn.
